Barnsley Council are establishing a new way to work with landlords to improve the quality of Private Rented Sector (PRS) housing and encourage a greater customer choice throughout the borough. The rating scheme works in a similar way to the scheme used by the Food Standards Agency. Stars are awarded to landlords who comply with the law and who rent out properties that exceed the minimum statutory standards. If you are a landlord of a Barnsley property, you can register on the website to advertise private housing, houses, flats, lodgings, and properties available within the borough. The rating system has been formulated in consultation with landlords, and is based on four key principles – property standards, maintenance, legal compliance, and continued professional development (CPD). Each element is weighted, and together they provide a final score and associated star rating. Once registered, you can start advertising one or more properties on the website. In order to obtain your star rating you need to:
• Register as a landlord
• Register your properties
• Advertise each property as and when they become available

o 3-star properties - £50 discount
o 4-star and 5-star properties = £100 discount
